DFI Session 9

Well, we are all finished !

Today we sat our exam for Level 1. I think it was a perfectly pitched exam that covered a range of topics from the term. At the end I felt really happy that I could quickly articluate my new Google learning, as well as intergrate some of the MK Kaupapa alongside.

Within the feedback section of today I did talk about the range of topics that we have covered and how they were suited to my own place and space in the school setting. I feel that I have defintely gained more useable knowledge around Cybersmart and Intergrating more ICT into the classroom. I did comment about the collegiual aspect of MK and that this, and the passion seen by the Educators, was its stand out feature within the PLD domain.

The thoughts I had about MK for my future understanding and use of Digital tech was being abke to visit other teachers in my position both in class age as well as class needs. This would have been fantastic if we could have ( I understand Covid prevented us) while training. It could be something that may happen in the future with more schools uptaking DFI training.

I also wondered about having a few more papers, discussions or reflections about students of high needs using tech and the affect on their speech / language and cognitve abilites. In our area we are finding that maybe half a class of students are not ready for formal learning until they are 7...so where would ICT fit in this enviroment. Can we be loading children with Digital procedure and protocol ready for Chromebook usage in Year 3/4 or should it developing the DPA in a balanced Literate and Numerate setting?

Planning has been a huge part of my interst in DFI. Again a topic that will take more time for me to digest and review to eventually see the alignment with Teacher Appraisal and best practice within the school setting. Maybe as the school continues to develop their Annual planning alongside its digital practice we can unpack how planning look as a staff.

Best of luck to all the DFI staff and my face to face then Online learning buddies! Thank you for all your support, guidance and laughter!

DFI Session 8

Empowerment...

Kaupapa:

The use of computers and the Internet can aid NZ communities by supporting communication and access to information, building social capital and community capacity. With MK supporting the purchase of computers, using computers within the home  can assist the community planning process , community participation, and information sharing. We discussed today about the mums and Das' using the computer to have some better communication that can build community awareness, encourage local decision making and dialogue between groups, and support disadvantaged communities.

Change to Empowerment from Agency...Makes sense especically with our Whanau who may have had a bad time or experince with an outside agency. Student voice is still the underpinning idea or concept here - what can happen is that that Student voice lead to Students be given the change to have this voice heard more globally, and can support families speaking up or out! Rangitaitanga! Equity- from a whanau point of view was also unpacked using examples from around Auckland where connection was a big part of MK in schools... having a "buy in" scheme still means parents to be involed and interested. The term Empowerment also can mean that children who are apart of the MK program and are transenent - they still can use a device in a range of settings- hopefully leading to not missing out on too much mahi or a varitey of different styles.

Within the Empowerment Domain we aslo discuss the aspect of how Oral langauge fits into a Tech classrrom. One Enpowering concept was the 5 plus a day challenge in blogging- with tamariki being supported in making Statement versus conversation.

D.Curriculum

Curriculum:http://technology.tki.org.nz/Technology-in-the-NZC

Digital fluncey Vs Digital Tech- both expected to be deliverd from years 1-10. Where do we start to unpack adn creat this for our own schools was a question on all our minds I think today. We starting with talking about

Fluencey:

Choosing what to use (G Docs)

Computation:

Then applying that (ie to a meet)

I was interested to look at the start of the DC as from this graph the PO's seem to start in the later half of Level 1...Year 3? Also it dosen't cater for children not working in the NZC.

Alignment to Digital Currc to Cyber smart like the MK project could be a great place to start, as like the Annual planning we saw last week. I fel that having these ideas flaoting around now toward the Term 4 planning mode we could have some solid models or practise to look at.

Rananga Matihiko had some great "childs speak' around technology. I feel that this will be helpful to refer to  as we start looking and planning towards the future.

Coding tools:

https://studio.code.org- this could be a fun project to use with some students. I think its aweome that that they have included some lessons plans and it also looks like that we can go further with these projects. A hour is a very long peroid of time to be working with computers in a junior classroom.. I wonder if it can be stop and started over a few weeks?

Scratch I have got scratch working a bit in my classroom after using mapping and direction unit.  I find it a bit challenging to be fair with the buttons and cues. Need more tutorial time. Adding text aslo - the children have to be able to use a keyboard to type in the words they want to say or have someone type n for them. Again it is a fun activity however needs Tuakana to work properly to get a poilished result. I like the thouigh of children planning it on a monday/ tuesday then creating on Wed /Thursday.

Really enjoyed reserching and diving into the non computional lessons! This is totally in my comfort zone in regards to challenges, wording and delivery. Could fit really well into Discovery time. I can see things like fitting in the NZC and DigitalC annual planning using the Rananga Matihiko matrix.

DFI Session 7 Devices

 WOW heaps of info today!

I do remember the word Ubiquitous  from a few meetings ago! It was really cool to talk about students taking learning into thier own hands with Rewindable learning. I also liked gaining family voice and engagement. I though the SLJ was super and really hope it will happen this year for my own two children as well as those at school.

https://summerlearningjourney.blogspot.com/

Had a lovely visit from Fiona... I love the Annual pathway that she shared:

Cybersmart Curriculum Empowering our learners as connected and confident decision makers.

Wonders:

Slide 10....Thinking of planning does it reflct this?

Slide 11..shared language that EMPOWERS

Thinking about Absentism- I wonder if children who are absent alot may engage while being at home?

Digital Dig Chromebook:

Screen castify- spotligh/fireworks. Like that it is intuitive and saves to Drive. Clicking copy shareable link means you can adapt the sharing settings.

Stylus pen

KAWA: Have seen this in my sons school. great idea as long as the family home support this. I wonder what happend if things arent followed? Do students get discontunued?

My learning using an Ipad:

Great to have these exlained to us as well as tips that could work in a classroom. My situation is not 1-1 it is shared so I am thinking of how this could look.

EE was a great little extra...I think it would take some time for me to understand it, the children would  probally cotton on quickly as they do. I am not sure about it with student of high learning needs as there are a lot of buttons to use. It would be cool if there was a simple simple version that could be created. In my recording i stated aout using it on an active board/ big TV to share with the children first.

The sharing/ upload took quite a while and I foudn that a bit much but probally becasue I was signed into 2 devices. This wa my creation under Free account.  I spend half the time working out the buttons ..LOLS..but then got the hang of it.

I couldn't open the teachers file from Point Chev, however what Vicki did show us was pretty cute. It hink it could work in a small group situation instead of whiteboards/exercise books..cost savings!. I think having a database with these activites in your school could be benefical...I am thinking of time managment.

Challenge

My next activity was to  use either EE or screen castify to unpack a lesson plan that would recommend to others. Just with needing more time on EE I decided to look at how I can use screen Castify (instead of my son recording on my phone and shaking)

My SC Challenge

  • What are the key messages / learning intentions in this lesson?

Be Internet Awesome Unit 4 Lesson 1:1 Its cool to be kind
1. Understand - what empathy is
2. Practise - empathising with people depicted in media
  • How have/could you personalise this lesson for your learners? And what would it look like on your learning site?

I think some of the older studnets could record there voices or we could insert the child in there not have a cartoon.
In the website It would come under my Cybersmart heading as a slide. It could also be adapted into Hapara as a nice homelearning activity.
  • Are there opportunities within one of your current lessons to integrate these cybersmart concepts?

Yes. It could be in regards to heading back to school after Lockdown, but it might be better fitted at the start of a term. I ofetn start teh year with KOS so that could link nicley. These types of lesson also fit withi our PB4L values. I just need the time to review things and match them up.

Reflecting on the Kaupapa of the Manaiakalani Programme

in light of COVID 19 , whether you did Lockdown: Season 1 or Seasons 2/3/4, and YOUR readiness for ubiquitous learning...

  • What are you proud of?

I think I was proud that I hit the round running and I was straight up with whanau about what was on offer. I know all of them have internet and laptops/ tablets at home so to not join in is totally their desicion not for the lack of trying on my part.
I think I took risks with my ideas and loading my planning and work onto hapara.
I am just really proud of my own children and that they supported each other and me in their tasks.

  • What do you regret?

Probally sending too much time with my class and not with my own kiddies- however ( this links to the proud moment) I am very proud of my children of how they managed ther lockdown and using their devices at home.
  • What have you taken forward into the ‘new’ era of schooling?

Although I am learning lots I still have questions...hahah lifelong learner maybe or old fuddy? I can see some excitng and clever SPARK moments and could totally understand the high engagment.I, however, don't think I am ready to leave behind some of the old era either as I just see alot of benefit on social and emotional activities that promote learning (LTP, Discovery time) as well as new PLD such as BSL and T shaped Literacy as well as just plain old simple sharing circle and big ook time. Also, to answer How are you using rewindable learning to support 1. Young people with learning needs? 2. Diversity, groups, wide range of abilities? .... we have such low oral language and basic skills coming in with our children. Many arent ready to even learn until they are 7...I am thinking where would didgital take a place here as surely they need to be literate and numerate before they can drive their on learning.

I also have thoughts about Hugh needs students or children with disability..where do they fit ?

I think for me I would love to actually visit classes within the lower age bracket and high needs children look at good practise before i can jump on the new era bandwangon.

How did you support your learners for these days when you knew you were going to be absent (ie at DFI)?

I have an amazing CRT teacher who follows our class programme so no random work. I can se they helpfulness of her able able to follow directly from the site, as well as the low disruption to the children (agency)

What COULD you have done from the beginning if you knew what you know now?

I am not sure I could change much do to what I said before about having such low oral langauge, developmental delays. I think the website etc are cool for the middle and higher end of the class room however your targets studetns and those who can not access Level 1 of the curriuuum need as much human contact as possible.

What digital tools could you make more use of?

I like Screen castify and that could fit well with the lesson planning

Slides

EE needs more learning about

What work flows could you be adding? ie systems or processes

I think just small steps here. I can't change how I have planned for years...it's to just to hard to do during the school year- my brain will fry. I think though moving foward that as a synidcate we could totally plan digital teaching around our MANA values and create some more reuseable plans that all could access (multimodals etc, slides etc)

Are you empowering your young people to create these rewindable learning objects?

Not yet...I think I need to get more comfortable in this first... :-)

DFI Session 6

What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today we focussed on our Sites...I think this is what alot of us where waiting for! It was lovely to talk more about the visible aspect of these sites and also how the sites can range from person to person.

I enjoyed viewing the different sites from around Nz, and there were a few that caught my eye as a creator that I definitely would like to look more at and even borrow some ideas.

As a team we were able to recognise things that worked and things that didn’t which was awesome as sometimes teaching and learning can actually be lonely if you are working through an Inquiry. I really liked having the feedback from all the DFI team on my own site as we often don’t get feedback from whanau or tamariki. Like I mentioned in my WWW- I had to have a big tantrum and walk away for 24 hours before engaging in my site so I hope now I have the knowledge to improve but also keep my vision

https://docs.google.com/document/d/13maizAHHdtz0p4gBVuMszDNeJn9XJbB5xP_EJgrgZW0/

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Todays tool were very helpful like being able to create little additions to our site that will encourage engagement and ease of use. I just really enjoyed the human voice and perspective from today that has given me encouragement to take a risk...like the roles have been reversed in someways me beign the learner. I have been very blessed in Lockdown to have my own children help me design things on my page so that has worked in well with my adventures online.

It was fun to work together and see the great creations from others and hear their narrative about their journies.

It is really like we are in the classroom - watching and learning from each other, which is exactly where the tamariki will be when we have all finished this course :-)

What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

This one still is hard for me as I am a bit of a over planner! I need more research and time to look at how the links are made between Digi Planning and normal/ old school planning. Especialy in regards to reflections. I think at first i might borrow a template from other Digi person and have a play with that to see what fits and how thie workflow could change to become more online

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life? hahaha what personal life...im a teacher...LOLS! I think the above might help ther inregards to being able to make the slide work as my planning- not doing 2 things. However I have to also remember that at present in class my class dont use the website they are very reliant on me for instruction and learning. It will take time but I am starting my way forward with a clear picture thanks to the team today xxx

DFI Session 5

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

Today was a great hands on session where we spoke about making learning visible

and why. To be Visible the learning I create needs to be accessible  to:

Whanau

Teacher / Colleagues

Learner-(who is at the Centre)

Sometimes within the classroom setting students have no idea where they are going- lost like in a maze. They need ‘bread crumbs’ to help them along their way and this takes shape as Digital Tech. What was relevant to talk about was that , yes our learners do have different experience in homes- (Oral Language is becoming aMASSIVE issue for our children in regards to linking learning!) so how can we encourage success and being able to share safely with a range of people who may or may not be literate in Numeracy and Literacy.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

SC / WALT- in the teaching learning journey can still be seen in DTech- keep it viable for everyone which I really value to encourage conversations with learners and their families. I don’t believe in deficit thinking at all within the classroom and feel that that is such a shame when people (yes academics) peg hole teachers and student in this model without understanding the DATS around scaffolding and groupings as best to support growth.

3 A’s with Digital technology:

Accessible

Available

Advance

Fits with Blogger- Feedback and feed-forward (haha slowly I am coming around to Blogger!)

Multi modal-Class site with Pedagogial underpinning it. Sphere- web design in terms of navigating. MM has advantages:

engaging

hook

confidence

ownership

DESIGN: Behavioural engaged-Multimodal) activity involved- sustaining self directed (multi textural T-shaped Literacy)

See my shared readers

My exsiting Site Please note I am working on this during Lockdown so one day it might be this then another day that!

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

Ok…big task but I am going to work on my site as when I created it (a year ago) it was for PARENTS as I did not have devices. However I am slowly learning (like the tortoise) that yes the children can be a part of this as well and that they a can teach me and their whanau. Lockdown could be a good test.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

I think all of the above. Looking at sites allowed some creative juices to flow, and I really liked tapping into the T shaped literacy PLD I did… It is slowly clicking into place.

I do still think thought that being present in front of the class is very important and I don’t ever want to be replaced by a ipad or computer...though my student might think otherwise. I hope that I can start developing things a bit more children friendly that can walk beside us in the class room or be a “ I have learnt this and celebrated with my class that NOW I can post to share not the other way around

Moving forward:

Reflect on Google class on air-Teachers inquire - reflects on COLs goals

Change site to be more kid friendly. Website ‘real estate’ screen (Appeal to children text drop versus  bright/visual/displaying with key buttons)...Class walls analogy

Session 4- Dealing with Data

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I enjoyed this part the most to be fair - the sharing around childrens learning and experiences.
It became apparent that the children involved in blogging and sharing really were very passionate about their mahi. I could see the intrest in and about each others work and how this connect families to the tamariki.

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Sharing DFI toolkits with syndicate - done! This is very collaborative and I think the others will really enjoy hopping on and finding videos or infomation about their interests or class direction.
Class on Air ... I can only dream! We did talk about this as a Cluster in regards to Reading. It does sounds pretty fantastic but I feel I need to unpack this a bit more and learn more about my Mk journey to see if it was the right pathway for my learning.
I was quite comfortable using Forms but good to go over the secrets. It would be interesting to do this for FB vs Blogger Vs website with whanau....am I over communicating?

  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners, how could they use?

Today I also learnt how to insert Smiley faces in forms- have a look at my effort today Form. This is a more junior approach to forms and I look forward to creating a few more survey's that use these. These also have given me  a great idea for children with high learning needs.

Maps- Linking to out Ko wai au unit and other areas of Connected Curriculum (Social studies) How Waitara got is name

Slides- great tools for reporting to Principal and Board My Blog report

I feel that my class has started to give postive feedback to others especailly with Writing. Funnily enough it does follow similar guidelines of the MK Kaupapa as below..but I love the three key ideas...maybe I can start using this visual in the classroom as well

  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Investigate more about the Auidence / vlews on blogger Vs facebook VS HERO (SMS). This is quite a big interst of mine as I am very aware of Teacher workload. We dont get the engagement on HeRO that we would like so I am wondering about using blogger to repeat the learning and seeing what success the class can get on here.

DFI Session 3 Slides- Upgrading and Animation

  • What did I learn that increased my understanding of Manaiakalani kaupapa and pedagogy?

I enjoyed this create session today as it gave me tips and ideas to take back to the classroom. This create session allowed for experimenation and discussion and alot of laughter which is awesome as it replicated what will go on in a classroom. I also liked us breaking of into topic specifc groups or bubbles so that we can choose ideas or themes that suited us more and allowed for agency and autonomy. I also enjoyed reading about the cybersaftey part of MK. This puts my mind at ease and Im sure will also help parents and whanau feel more comfortable with being the learner and their child the teacher!
"Lifelong Kindergarten Group" philosophy interests me and as I read more about this I hope I can share this kaupapa with the Syndicate.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow as a professional?

Slides is my main form of planning at the moment on my webpage. Working with the three tutors day meant I could practise and problem solve to enhance my abolity to support the children in my class to access and safely use tech .
I feel confident (not to confident) about creating an engaging slide for work flow for the children in my class and then allowing them to take a risk aswell and create a slide animation.
  • What did I learn that could be used with my learners?

As metioned I like the thought of giving purpose to Writing tasks with the animation. At the moment we have be looking at scratch jnr, however for the ease of teaching and sharing Slides could be a great place to start.
  • What did I learn that could improve my confidence, capability or workflow in my personal life?

Utilsing my new knowledge within weekly planning.
Maybe focus on accessing a Slide for one reading group or writing group first and then then slowly become the tuakana for the class
Making sure that we can share these slides! This will be a work on as my time with blogger has been a bit hit and miss this week!
Ka kite whanau
